Codex says “usage limit reached”: what to check next

Distinguish an exhausted allowance from a service incident or account problem, in the right order.

The short answer

Check account usage first, official status second, and session or client issues third. Repeated retries rarely fix a real limit.

01

Identify the limiting window

Check whether either the short or weekly allowance is exhausted and note the displayed recovery time. If the account explicitly shows a cap, network troubleshooting is unlikely to help.

02

Rule out a service incident

If allowance remains but many tasks fail, inspect OpenAI’s official status. Broad errors, queues or login failures are stronger outage signals.

03

Create a minimal reproduction

Try a small new task without a large context, re-authenticate and confirm the client is current. Preserve timestamps, error text and task IDs if the problem continues.

  • Avoid rapid retries
  • Do not delete workspaces blindly
  • Keep reproducible steps

Frequently asked questions

Will refreshing restore my usage?+

It can refresh stale UI state but cannot change the real allowance.

Does every failure mean the limit is exhausted?+

No. Outages, expired sessions and task-specific failures can look similar.
